Fiber

Soft and warm, alpaca fiber is light-weight and hollow core. It is smooth, without the barbs that sheep wool has; alpaca fiber does not itch as wool does. The soft, lustrous alpaca fiber was once reserved only for Incan royalty. Today it is sought out by fiber artists and textile producers.

There are 22 natural colors of alpaca fiber, including shades of white, fawn, brown, gray and black.

Alpacas are sheared annually for the fiber (the animals need not die to harvest the fiber). An individual alpaca yields from five to ten pounds of fiber each year, which is worth $200 - $400.
